Food Styling and Photography

Lori Maffei is a wonderful photographer. Not only does she have a degree in Photojournalism, she can capture the beauty within buildings, landscapes and the inner soul of people. She decided to tackle my challenge of photographing my work! Her work can be found at Garden Plate magazine, New Jersey Peak magazine, as well as New Jersey Life magazine. The covers of the October / November 2006, October / November 2007 AND April / May 2008 issues of Garden Plate were hers! Not only can she take pictures of food, she does excellent food styling as well. PLEASE contact her if you are interested in her work. Thanks!

Recipe Developing

Family and friends from different cultures and countries have added to her interest in different customs and food experiences. Vegetarians and kosher eaters have passed on recipes, tips and techniques. Others with health-related diets, such as diabetics and those needing lower fat meals have benefited from her desire to learn, research and perfect dishes to suit their needs!

Her recipes have been published in a variety of locations, including Bon Appetit, Family Circle, Light & Tasty, Taste of Home, Cooking Pleasures magazine and Turning Leaf Wine brochure. She has also won competitions for her recipe developing at Cook's Illustrated, as well as Better Homes and Garden.

Food Writing

Jennifer A. Wickes is a freelance food writer, recipe developer, food styler and cookbook reviewer that lives on the East Coast. Writings by Jennifer can be found in numerous printed publications, as well as online. Her Blog, Food Pursuit, has been one of the Best 100 Culinary Sites at Chef2Chef.net since March 2001, and currently is still ranking at #31!

She is interested in writing freelance since it allows her the freedom to work from home and control the amount of work she does, while continuing to raise her children. Not only is she an excellent multi-tasker, she thoroughly enjoys food, research, writing and cooking.

When Jennifer writes, she enjoys teaching her readers what is happening in the kitchen. Today, most Americans cook, but do not know how to cook. She believes that if you understand your ingredients, then you can become more confident and creative in the kitchen. She, also, enjoys writing about fruits and vegetables. In our modern world, where everything is packaged for people on-the-go, it is good to remind everyone of nature's harvest and teach them about the fruits and vegetables around them, encouraging them to focus on eating more produce.

Influences in her life have contributed to her food experiences. With family and friends from all over the world, and her ability to acclimate easily to different cultures, she enjoys trying new cuisines.

Her articles have been found in Gulf Coast Living magazine, Countryside Living magazine, Home Cooking magazine, Kiwi magazine, Suite101.com, Gather.com and regularly at Garden Plate magazine.

Cookbook and Product Reviews

Jennifer Wickes has been reviewing cookbooks and food products for a few years. Her work has appeared at Suite101.com, The Library Journal, Amazon.com, Food Reference.com, as well as various other locations across the Internet.

Many of her reviews have been so appreciated that the publishers have featured them at their website! A Collection of Fine Baking, Food and Drink in Argentina, and The Slow Food Guide to Chicago (they spelt my name wrong!).

If interested in any of her reviews, check out her Cookbook and Product Reviews blog!

Bio

Jennifer A. Wickes has always had an interest in different cultures, countries, cooking and languages. Her mother, who was raised in Argentina, fueled her interests. Despite not being raised bilingual, she heard her mother speak Spanish almost daily with friends and family, and introduced Jennifer to her English / Irish / Scottish / Swedish heritage.

By the early age of nine, she began cooking and, later, enrolled in a Food and Nutrition course offered through her school, participating in the program for the next five years. That course taught her everything from basic cooking and baking techniques, to choosing cuts of meat, selecting pots and pans, cooking foods for health reasons (diabetes, pregnancy etc.) and kitchen design. She received a certificate from this program. She, also, experimented with languages, studying French for seven years, as well as Latin for four years. While in college, she majored in Spanish with a minor in Cultural Anthropology and became a member of Sigma Delta Pi, a national Spanish honor society.

Having lived in a variety of locations both in the USA (the Mid West, the South, the West Coast and the East Coast) and abroad (Bermuda and Argentina) greatly fueled her passion for food and cooking.

Many people in her family share her love for food. Her brother holds a degree in Restaurant Management; she has an uncle that retired as a food broker; another uncle is a food importer; her grandfather was in the meat packing industry; her mother organized parties and social gatherings as fundraisers; and many other family members who really enjoy cooking and eating!

Before delving into her passion as a career, she actively considered becoming an investigator, a teacher and a cook. She worked for the 10th largest brewery in the United States in their Specialty Foods division. She was also a Public Relations Representative with her local Humane Society and a disc jockey. These jobs both gave her exposure to the media at all levels and experience speaking publicly. She, also, wrote an Employee Manual, a Cal-OSHA Approved Safety Manual, a Training Manual, and has been the Editor to numerous newsletters! These writing experiences helped Jennifer learn how to write on a variety of levels.

Her work has appeared in publications such as: Bon Appetit magazine, Cook's Country, The Library Journal, and Garden Plate. In her spare time, which is rare, she enjoys watching foreign films, reading (armchair travel books, Latin American authors, cookbooks), listening to world music and making friends from other countries. She enjoys travelling, and it is her hope to travel again when her children become older!
